A couple of works in progress

Random Undertale Sculpt

So first of all, I'm a big dork for Undertale.  I finished the game back in December and had a great experience with it and did this little drawing.

Then last week we lost power at work and had to go home, and I decided it would be fun to do a quick little sculpt version of the drawing I'd done earlier.  Partially to learn some Zbrush 4R7 modeling features on something simple, but mostly because I'm a big dork.  After I finish posing this I think I'll have it printed as a little sculpture.

Science World and Dr Sketchy's

Some sketches from this past weekend.  Some from a Dr. Sketchy's life drawing session and some from Science World's Animals Inside and Out exhibit.

Mutilator Illustrations

These are spot illustrations I did for a role playing game being developed by a former coworker.  I'll post more information about the game once it's available :)

Griffin Face Sculpt and Anatomy Studies

A couple of miscellaneous things to post.

For a while now I've been working on a chavant clay sculpture of a griffin-like creature face.  Here are some progress images of that.

And on an unrelated note, here are some animal anatomy studies I drew at the Body Works animal anatomy exhibit as Science World.

Some Dragon-y Paintings

Here are a few things I painted for fun at home after work.  The first two are paintings I just did for myself and the bottom image is a couple of paintings I did as gifts for friends.

This guy isn't a dragon, he's a dinosaur.  Everyone at the company art show called him a dragon, though, haha!

These are two paintings I did for my friends of their Dragon Age characters because we're all really big dorks :)  Their tarot cards are the Page and Knight of Swords.

Modeling/Texturing work from Nerd Corps

Since many of the things I worked a couple of years ago have aired now, I can finally post some of the work that I did.  Since then I've worked at a couple of different companies on different projects, but for now at least I can do a little bit of an update.

Here are a few images of characters that I worked on for one of the Monster High direct to DVD movies.  The top character I textured, the center character I modeled, and the bottom character I modeled and textured.

Here are a couple of props and a vehicle from a couple of different Monster High episodes.  I modeled all three, but only textured the crown.

Here are some assets I modeled and textured for the show Endangered Species, which aired on Teletoon.

These are some screencaps showing a set I built and textured, which was the exterior of the characters' stump house.

Here are a few character costumes/variations I did for Merl

Assorted props :)

And some fun secondary characters

Some Drawings

Just posting some drawings I had around.

Stuff

The Three Beasts

Life drawings from an after work session.

The pet characters, Seven, Treble, and Flare from the show Little Charmers, which I worked on at Atomic Cartoons.  Last week was my last week there, as I just took a job at Bardel Entertainment.

Some drawing practice and some sculpting

I try to make sure I do daily drawings in the evening for practice.  Here are a few.

And here's what I've been sculpting recently.  I brought Lying Cat to a place where I would be happy leaving her for now and getting her printed.  I may work on her later, but for now I'll move on.  I also got a start on a sculpt of Hannah from the comic Rat Queens.  I'll at least make this a full bust.  Maybe I'll take it further.

Various Project Updates

First of all, I'm trying to get that little creature ready to do some poses and a final turnaround in Maya and also using the project as an opportunity to learn more of the Arnold renderer.  Here's the model with 32 bit displacement in Arnold.  Next up will be posing and tweaking lighting, then I think I'll be able to call him done.

Get to the choppaa!!

I also started a head sculpt of the character Lying Cat from the Saga comics.  I love the artist Fiona Staples' expressive style, and Saga is full of wonderful characters I would like to sculpt at some point.  Lying Cat seemed like the most doable side project to take on while working full time, though.

This is actually very old, but I realized I never did post an image of the 3D print I had made of this character.  I'm pretty happy with it, and I'd love to do more prints in the future.  I can easily see myself spending all my money making toys.  This character was designed by Caitlyn Harris.

3D project progress and some drawings

Seemed like it was time for an update, so here are a few things I've been working on.

The creature (who still needs a name of some sort) is almost done, I think.  I'm planning to just finish up his normal and displacement maps, render him nicely, and call him done.  At some point I might go back and work on giving him full textures, but for now I just need to finish things, which has been pretty difficult for me to do while working.

My friend Simone Brundisini asked me to model a 3D head for a stop motion puppet he's building.  The plan is to composite the 3D face onto the stop motion puppet for a short test to see if that process is doable and appealing.  Right now I'm trying to find the balance between matching the proportions of the drawing and giving the character appeal in 3D space.  The character design and linework is by Carlo Gemmani.

And here are some 2D things.  Mostly just practicing painting on some faces I had in my sketchbook.

A couple of observational sketches

Just a couple of sketches I scanned recently.  One is a marker sketch done at White Pine a while back.  The car I drew while at a Starbucks the other day because that car was parked outside the window and it was cool :)

Normal Maps, Doodles, Sugar Rush, Pokemon

Most of my time I'm at work, but here are various things I've done in my spare time.

Working on normal and displacement maps for the creature I posted earlier.

Some doodles from my work notebook that I liked enough to scan and put together.

So, I know I'm well over a year late for this party, but I was looking around and saw some other artists' self portraits as characters from the game Sugar Rush in Wreck it Ralph and I decided it would be fun to do one of my own.  Even though the time for that meme is long past, haha!

A bunch of my coworkers and I did that December Pokemon drawing challenge this past month.  I only got about halfway through, but it was still fun.

Creature Base Mesh

Well, I finalized the base mesh for my creature model, and my friend is working on rigging it, so we're making progress.  I also experimented with the Arnold renderer a bit - lighting the scene and using a couple of skin shaders.

Work Doodles

I grabbed a few of my doodles that I liked out of my notebook that I use at work for various things.  I usually end up sketching while waiting for things like AO bakes and approval renders.

Elephant Creatures and Corgis

So I`m still working away these days.  Now on a different show - Endangered Species - so I haven`t had much time for personal work or for posting the stuff I do have, but I do get a few little things done, and I`m doing a small project with a friend.  Here are some sketches of the elephant-like creature he chose from the lineup posted earlier.  Just wanted to do some poses to get a feel for things and play with some colors.

I also drew my friend Brittani as some kind of corgi-riding samurai.  Yeah.

Some drawings

Since Vancouver is such a beautiful city, I like to go out and sketch people and places sometimes.  Here's a few pages' worth of sketches from my little sketchbook that I carry around.

My friend, an animator, wanted a creature to animate, so I designed a few, and he'll chose one he wants modeled.

In other news, I am a unicorn.

All the Beautiful Creatures

This is a drawing I did a while back and had forgotten to post.
